The Difference Between Responsive and Mobile-Friendly

The biggest complaint I hear from clients is "my site sucks on mobile." With the majority of consumers using their mobile devices to search, it is imperative to the success of your company to have a fully-responsive web design. If load speeds are too long, or links are too small to tap, you're going to lose your audience. But with a responsive site that is custom designed for each device's experience, you're going keep those visitors, and give them them an impressive experience that can lead to converting them into a customer. Ease of use is so important with web design - a navigable site, no matter the device, only leads to success.

Mobile-Friendly Site

A mobile-friendly website is one that is designed to work the exact same way across all devices. This means that the experience you get on a desktop will be the exact same on a mobile device. Features like navigation drop-downs are limited, as they can be difficult to use on mobile. And no Flash animation is used. The website is literally the same across the board, with no usability concerns regardless of the device on which it is being viewed.

Fully-Responsive Site

A responsive website is one that responds (or changes) based on the needs of the user's device (mobile, tablet) that they're viewing it on. Text and images change from a three-column layout, to a single column display. Unnecessary images are hidden so they don’t interfere or compete with the more important information on the site's smaller display.

If you are on a computer, you can tell if a site is responsive by reducing your browser’s window size from full screen down to very small. If the appearance of the text, images and menu change as you get smaller, the site is responsive.

While you can get by with a mobile-friendly site, we strongly recommend going with a responsive design. This limits the number of issues your visitors experience, which in turn improves your metrics and conversion rates.
